Your First Week With Braces: What to Expect

Read this in বাংলা

The first few days after getting braces on are usually the most noticeable part of the entire process. Your teeth and gums are adjusting to something new, and it’s normal for that to feel a little strange at first.

Mild soreness is normal

Most patients notice some tenderness in the first two to three days, especially when biting down. This is your teeth responding to the gentle pressure the wire is applying. Over-the-counter pain relief and softer foods for the first few days can help, but sharp or worsening pain is worth calling about.

Your cheeks and lips need a few days to adjust

Brackets are a new texture inside your mouth, and some irritation on the inside of the cheeks or lips is common in week one. Orthodontic wax placed over the bracket that’s causing friction can make a real difference while your mouth adjusts.

Stick to softer foods at first

Sticky, hard, or chewy foods are worth avoiding for the first several days — think soups, pasta, and other soft options. Your orthodontist will go over the full list of foods to avoid for the duration of treatment at your next visit.

When to call your orthodontist

A little soreness is expected, but a broken bracket, a wire poking uncomfortably, or pain that isn’t easing after the first week are all reasons to get in touch rather than wait it out.
