What Happens at a Clear Aligner Check-In Visit

Clear aligners are designed to be worn mostly at home, but that doesn’t mean treatment happens without any oversight. Periodic check-in visits are part of the plan, usually spaced several weeks apart.

Checking that treatment is tracking as planned

At each visit, your orthodontist compares your current tooth positions against the digital treatment plan. This is how they confirm your aligners are fitting the way they should and that movement is happening as expected.

Reviewing wear time and tray fit

Aligners generally need to be worn around 20 to 22 hours a day to work as intended. Your orthodontist will ask about your wear routine and check how well the current tray is seating, since a loose-fitting tray can be a sign that more wear time is needed before moving to the next stage.

Handing over the next set of trays

Depending on how your treatment plan is structured, you may leave a check-in visit with several trays’ worth of aligners to work through before your next appointment, along with any adjusted instructions.

If something isn’t tracking

Sometimes a tooth needs a bit more time before the next tray fits comfortably. That’s a normal part of the process, and it’s exactly what these visits are for — catching it early rather than pushing ahead with a tray that doesn’t fit yet.
